Top of the World Highway

View of the highway, notice the lighter colored patch just ahead and then the highway off in the distance. The trees are black spruce that were burned in a wildfire a couple of years ago. The highway was shut down for three or four days. The next picture is of fireweed in the foreground and the side of the mountain is covered with fireweed making the entire face a beautiful purple color.

Downtown Chicken;-) It consists of three connected establishments, a gift shop, a bar and a cafe. Fresh pies: blueberry, apple and cherry. Also had brownies, cinnamon buns, muffins and turnovers. All family run.

After much waffling we headed out on the Top of the World Highway. Nothing I say could possible do justice to just what this "highway" was like. The first 70 miles wasn't too bad. Lots of pot holes and patches, dips and frost heaves. Just before Chicken the pavement went away and became gravel. We travelled on this type of road for just over 100 miles. Now picture a narrow winding road with extreme drop offs and no guard rails. There were a couple of 9% grades. The views were breathtaking, mountains no matter where you looked. It is definitely like being on the top of the world. We are glad we did it but would never do it again. A very long drive where you had to be alert at all times. Most of the drive was done at 30 mph or less.
