On to Grand Canyon

Heading to the canyon area, to a park in Williams. Been checking the temps every morning and for the past week the temps have been the same in Portland and the canyon. Here's a few more pics of the forest and my friend the 'raven'..Trivia time: Thinking of stopping in Winslow, on the way to canyon? Known for the Lyric 'standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona' from what song and by whom?? From looking at the map it may not be possible while towing a camper to get downtown to do this.. Oh well..Notice the pic I took of a mound of which Jo-Ann would not let me give it it's proper name..ha,ha..

Rte 66

More pictures from the Petrified Forest. Petroglyphs and ruins of a community, it had 100 rooms with a center square and a Kiva for ceremonial events. Carole I thought of you all day, you would love this place it is right up your alley;-) Found RTE 66 again today. Now that we aren't looking for it any more we find it all over the place. The last is a picture of our "shade tree" on our campsite. We will be heading closer to the Grand Canyon tomorrow for 4 days. A much needed rest period. We are now three hours behind Maine and it is getting dark around 8. Our bodies are having a hard time adjusting to this latest change.

Spent the day at the Petrified Forest. It is a 28 mile drive through the park. Wasn't the best day for walking, we had 35mph gusts. The Painted Desert was wasted on Owen since he is color blind. He said it looked like broken pavement. The colors were wonderful but all just tints which he can't see. There was also lots of red and green again the two colors he can't see. We had a raven that followed us for most of the day. There are many scenic turnouts and at every one the raven was there. I started calling him Dougie, he would let us get pretty close without flying off. Right at the end we had a thunder storm. It teemed rain for about 10 minutes and then the sun was out again. Many pictures so it will be hard to pick just ten or so. We do have a picture of a lizard. It is just below the tuft of grass and blends in with the ground but is visible if you look for it.

Holbrook, AZ

Just a couple of thoughts. Owen mentioned that lawn mower sales would be pretty low in the area. Only we could go to the desert and have it rain. It is also only in the 80's when the normal temp is 101. I think it is us LOL. Not much to say today. Five hours in the truck on roads that were the same as previous days. Maybe not quite so desolate, more houses and communities. Did see goats and one lone llama (!!) today. We plan to stay here for two nights then move closer to the Grand Canyon for 4 nights. We are ready for a break, both of us are very tired and pretty sick of the truck. Trailer place right in the Grand Canyon Park is totally booked, probably for the entire summer so we will stay just outside of the park. Arizona does not do daylight saving time so we get an extra hour today. Who knew. Only the Navajo Reservation changes to DST. We are very confused but then again that isn't new ;-) Sara there are very few trees and most of the river and creek beds are dry funny how the desert is like that. Will be this way for a while. We'll be heading north in a week or so and then we might have less sand and wind.

On the road to Four Corners.

Went off to the Four Corners Monument today. Another hour on the road with lots of mountains and miles of scrub land. We saw a bob cat this morning while getting gas. It was across the street behind a fence so we couldn't get a picture. If it wasn't a bob cat it was the biggest house cat we had ever seen ;-) Many prairie dogs today. They were everywhere. Will post a picture of the one who volunteered to pose for us. Also saw a hawk and two crows at the "roadkill cafe".

The Four Corners wasn't exactly what we expected. It is literally out in the middle of no where, sort of expected that but it is more of a market place. Natives selling wares at very cheap prices. The same stuff selling in town would have been double or even triple what these Natives charged. Had a couple of stands selling "fry bread", some things are universal to all tribes. We talked to many vendors about Maine. One man was fascinated that we lived close to the ocean and a woman went to Foxwood every year for their powwow. A couple of pictures of Shiprock and the high way where the road was visible for miles.
