We went to this national park between the caverns and bat flight. It is in Texas but only a forty minute drive from Carlsbad. This park contains "the southernmost, highest part of the 50-mile-long Guadalupe Range. From the road it resembles a nearly monolithic wall through the desert". Guadalupe Peak is the highest point in Texas. It was once a reef of an ancient inland sea.
A few pictures to try to convey what these look like. Once you know they were once a reef it becomes obvious when you look at the mountains.
It was very quiet at the visitor center. Maybe three other people there with us. Not a very well known park. Not a lot of flash to this place, noted more for hiking than anything else.
We did get out and walk a little, it was another hot day so didn't venture too far.
The last two are at McKittrick Canyon. We were the only two people here. Had some nice hikes of all abilities if it wasn't so hot we might have walked a bit.
Tomorrow we will be in Texas. Nothing planned for the next couple of days but, you never know....
